Elder Panther Football -1923
REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 4-1-1
Head Coach: J. Ben Grause (Career Record: 4-1-1)
Captain: Edward Whitehead
Season Highlights: The Panthers of 1923 maintained an undefeated season until their final game, the first in the long rivalry with the then-nicknamed Blue Jackets of St. Xavier. St. Xavier High School was originally located downtown on Sycamore Street, and the game was played on the grounds of St. Xavier College, at Corcoran Field. Originally scheduled for Friday, November 23, the game was played the following Wednesday at St. Xavier's request due to injuries suffered by some of their players at the previous week's contest. The St. Xavier squad dominated the Panthers through most of the game, and the final score of 20-0 marked the first shutout suffered by Elder.
Not all scoring for the season can be accounted for, but the leading scorer for the season was clearly junior Ray Aug, who scored four additional touchdowns to the five he scored in the Batavia game, along with kicking 3 extra points, for a total of 57 points. Other strong contributors on the team were junior Edward "Tank" Donohoe, who did much of the team's passing and punting, and sophomore Captain Ed Whitehead, who also contributed 3 touchdowns during the season.
