Season Highlights: With only one returning starter and Captain Jim Hilvert lost for the season recovering from rheumatic fever, the Panthers struggled in 1958, achieving a record of 3-7. Senior quarterback Frank Fiorino connected with George Fay for four touchdown passes in the season's opening loss to Hamilton. "Butch" Bedinghaus, George Link, Terry Wainscott, and Gene Doll led the ground attack as the Panthers won the next two games, over Withrow and Chillicothe. Hurt by five fumbles, Elder was upset by Dayton's Colonel White Cougars, but recovered to defeat Toledo Scott on two Gene Doll TD runs. The team then lost on the road, dropping the Portsmouth contest 26-6.
Following shutouts by Purcell and Roger Bacon, the Panthers scored on a 61-yard punt return by Tom Lagaly but lost to St. Xavier on a 10-yard field goal with under a minute left in the game. The defeat placed them fourth in the league for the second year in a row. (The Spartans dominated their opponents under the leadership of Coach Bron Bacevich, finishing 10-0 and winning the City Championship.) Western Hills took the Thanksgiving Day game, 31-14. Highlight for the Panthers was a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Mike Paschka; Mustang halfback Pete Rose intercepted a pass and scored a touchdown.
Fay led the team in scoring with 32 points, on 5 TDs and a conversion (now worth 2 points). Fiorino passed for 750 yards and 6 TDs, and scored 3 TDs rushing to finish tied with "Butch" Bedinghaus, Gene Doll and Tom Lagaly for second in team scoring. Center Dick Buechler was named the team's MVP and was named to the Enquirer's first-team offense All-Stars.
