Season Highlights: Following the 1968 season, Coach Mike Honold announced his resignation, and Ken Haupt, assistant football coach at Roger Bacon for six years under Head Coach Bron Bacevich, was named his replacement.
The Panthers continued their outstanding play under Coach Haupt, finishing at 8-2, 6-1 in the GCL, good for second place. Moeller returned to the GCL summit, going undefeated overall at 10-0.
The season opened against Woodward with Steve Meier scoring twice on runs of 6 and 2 yards to provide the margin of victory, 12-6. The Panthers then traveled to Upper Arlington for their first meeting with the Golden Bears, defending state champions. The Panthers took an early lead on a Mike Parker TD run, but the conversion attempt was missed. Two blocked punts led to Upper Arlington scores, and they kicked both extra points to lead 14-6. Parker scored again with 5 minutes left in the game, but the conversion attempt failed.
Against Newport Catholic, the Panthers held a 7-6 lead going into the fourth quarter (scoring on a 50-yard pass from Mike Marchioni to Greg Hensley), and widened their lead with 20 unanswered points to win, 27-6. In the fourth quarter, Marchioni hit Parker and Hensley with scoring passes of 32 and 18 yards, respectively, while Steve Meier scored on an 8-yard run. The Panthers handed McNicholas their 30th loss in a row as they beat the Rockets 9-0. Bill Eilerman tackled Rockets' QB Steve Sandman in the end zone for a safety in the first quarter; in the third period, Mike Parker scored on an 8-yard run and Bob Rechtin followed with the PAT.
The Panthers took a 6-point lead on a Bruce Broxterman TD (set up by a Mike Collins fumble recovery) into the fourth quarter and withstood a St. Xavier drive to defeat the Bombers, 6-0. With 1:52 left, the Bombers drove 54 yards in 10 plays to the Panthers' 4-yard line with 5 seconds left, but couldn't cross the goal line. Elder's record reached 5-1 with a 21-6 win over Roger Bacon. Ed Tieman scored two TDs and Greg Hensley added a third in the contest; interceptions by Tony Cotter and Jim Daffin sealed the win.
Elder then faced the mighty Moeller Crusaders, sporting a 7-0 record, at Sycamore Stadium. The Crusaders' defense limited the Panthers to 131 yards and one Bill Farrell TD to win the contest, 27-7. Wins against Purcell and La Salle gave Elder second place in the GCL behind Moeller. The Panthers manhandled the winless Mustangs on Thanksgiving Day, 41-7, to end the season. Five Panthers scored touchdowns: Mike Dinkelacker (2), Marchioni, Parker, Meier, and Hensley.
Mike Parker led the season scoring with 42 points on 7 touchdowns, followed by Ed Tieman with 36 points (6 TDs), and Greg Hensley with 30 (5 TDs). Mike Marchioni passed for 1228 yards on the season, with Hensley his best receiver with 18 receptions for 462 yards and 4 aerial scores.
Co-Captain and Defensive Lineman Jim Christophel was named the team's Most Valuable Player, and received first-team All-City recognition from the Post and All-District recognition from area coaches, while Mike Dinkelacker received All-City honors from the Post and All-District honors from the Associated Press at offensive end.
