Season Highlights: Having won only 3 out of 51 league games since joining the GCL in 1962, McNicholas departed the league following the 1969 season. St. Xavier beat the Moeller Crusaders and tied La Salle to take the GCL Championship. Unable to top the Panthers in 8 previous tries, the Lancers managed to battle Elder to a scoreless tie in their ninth meeting. The Panthers finished fourth in the league, behind La Salle for the first time, who finished third.
Coach Haupt began his third season as Head Coach with a 14-6 win over Woodward. Rookie QB Tim Reilly tossed a 9-yard TD pass to Greg Hensley and scored on a 1-yard run himself to bring home the win. The Panthers managed 218 yards on the ground, 196 yards of which was gained by junior Ed Gonzalez. Against the Thomas Jefferson Patriots, the Panthers fell 26-12, in spite of outgaining the Patriots in total yards 393-277, and Gonzalez' 206 rushing yards.
The first GCL game of the season was against Purcell, and the Cavaliers were no match for the Panthers, losing 42-8. Gonzalez again gained 196 yards on the ground, but this time scored three TDs. Bruce Broxterman, Bob Kramer, and Mike Rizzo also contributed scores, while the defense recovered 2 fumbles and intercepted 3 Cavalier passes. Following the scoreless tie with La Salle, the Panthers topped the Spartans of Roger Bacon 16-12, on touchdowns by Gonzalez and Ed Bauer. Trailing 16-6 at the half, the Spartans controlled the ball for most of the second half but could only manage one more TD.
With a 3-1-1 record at the halfway point in the season, the Panthers faced St. Xavier. The Bombers scored a touchdown in every quarter while holding the Panthers to only 41 yards rushing for the game and one score in the fourth quarter. Moeller scored what was to be the only touchdown of the game in the first two minutes, and held on for a 9-0 victory. The Panthers reached the Moeller four-yard line, but fumbled on their best chance to score, and lost the ball on their final possession on an interception.
The Panthers played McNicholas in a non-league game, picking up a school record 580 total yards, including 459 rushing, as they pummeled the Rockets 58-0, setting a school record for the largest margin of victory, and second only to the 59 points scored against Woodward in 1954 for the most points scored in a game. Ed Gonzalez rushed for 191 yards in the game, and Jerry Vogele picked up over 100 yards for the first time with 117. Gonzalez scored 3 TDs, two on runs of 62 and 64 yards, and one on a 34-yard pass from Bob Kramer. Vogele scored 2 TDs, on runs of 54 and 37 yards; Bob Lambers, Mike Rizzo and Steve Meier also added TDs.
The Panthers turned in another scoring barrage against Newport Catholic, winning 43-12; Gonzalez and Vogele each scored twice. The defense took the forefront in the Thanksgiving Day contest, with 2 interceptions by Larry Koopman and 3 fumble recoveries by Koopman, Bob Baur and Jack Bauer, who returned the ball 38 yards for a touchdown. Western Hills was limited to only 84 total yards in the 26-0 Panther win, their twelfth straight.
Ed Gonzalez led the team in scoring for the season with 72 points on 10 touchdowns and 6 conversions. He rushed for 1210 yards on 154 carries. Greg Hensley led the team in pass receptions with 15, totaling 262 yards and 3 TDs. Ed Bauer was named team MVP, the GCL's Outstanding Defensive Lineman, and first team All-Star by the Post. Defensive Tackle Bill Eilerman, who shared the team's Best Defensive Lineman honors with Bauer, was first team All-GCL, first team All-District, and was named to the Parade Magazine All-American High School Team, Elder's first such national recognition.
