Head Coach: John Owens (Career Record: 9-19-1)
Captains: Mike Bockhorst, Jim Flowers, John Scherch
Final GCL Standings
1. Moeller 2. St. Xavier 3.
ELDER 4. La Salle 5. Roger Bacon
Season Highlights: Optimism, tempered by the disappointment of two losing seasons in a row, opened the 1986 season under Coach John Owens. Linebacker Mike Bockhorst, Offensive Tackle Jim Flowers, and Defensive Back John Scherch were the Tri-Captains as the Panthers took the field at Western Hills High School for the season's opening game. Down 17-8 with under 10 minutes left in the game, the Panthers took less than two minutes to complete a 68-yard drive, scoring on a 3-yard TD run by Scott Pangallo. John Scherch intercepted a Western Hills aerial and the Panthers began their drive to take the lead at the Elder 46 with about 2:00 minutes left. After gaining about 20 yards, a West High interception ended the threat, and the Mustangs won their second consecutive game against Elder, 17-15, for the first time since 1945-46.
Halfback Tom Meier and QB Jeff Bleh each ran for a touchdown, and Brian Daugherty kicked 2 PATs to give the Panthers their first win of the season over Woodward, 14-13. The Panthers recovered from a 13-0 deficit, led by Meier's 112 yards rushing. Elder's record dropped to 1-2 as they were defeated by Lima Senior, 27-21, at Lima. In Game 4, Dayton Dunbar won their first game over Elder in 4 tries, 17-9. Elder's scoring came on Mike Bockhorst reception of a 12-yard pass from Jeff Bleh, a Brian Daugherty PAT, and a safety.
The following week the Panthers were shutout by Kettering Alter, 21-0, in the first meeting between the two schools. The losing skid stretched to 4 as the Bombers defeated Elder at the Pit, 35-14. Tom Meier scored on a 1-yard run, and John Albers caught a 19-yard TD pass from Bleh in the contest. The defense rose to the occasion as Elder won its next game over La Salle, 14-6. Junior linebacker Tom Bonhaus had two interceptions, the Lancer QB was sacked the six times, and La Salle gained a total of 110 yards for the game. Scott Dattilo led the Panthers at QB in the first half, and drove the team to its first score on a one-yard Tom Meier run. Jeff Bleh took over in the second half, and led the team to its second score, a 4-yard TD reception by Steve Junker. Brian Daugherty kicked the two PATs.
Moeller and Elder met at Galbreath Field with Moeller's record at an uncharacteristic 5-2. The Crusaders trailed the Panthers following an early 86-yard TD pass from Bleh to Junker, 7-0, but four second-quarter Moeller TDs erased the Panthers' hopes for an upset, and they went down to defeat, 48-7. Elder regrouped and beat Roger Bacon, 21-7, behind Tom Meier's 3 touchdowns and 134 yards rushing. In Game 10 against Oak Hills, the Panthers were limited to five first downs and 142 total yards, losing 18-0. The team's 3-7 record gave Elder its third consecutive losing season, the first time that had happened since 1930-34, when the Panthers had five consecutive losing seasons.
Junior Tom Meier led the scoring for the season with 6 touchdowns and 36 points. Meier was also the team's leading rusher with 155 carries and 573 yards. Steve Junker had 8 pass receptions for 221 yards and 3 TDs, while Dave Raterman had 11 catches for 208 yards. Don Hilvert paced the defense with 116 tackle points and 4 sacks. Junior Jim Hilvert was close behind, with 113 tackle points, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 interception on the season.
Fairfield won the Division I state title, defeating Milford, 21-6, Dayton Dunbar, 19-9, and Worthington, 17-14 in OT, to get to the championship game. In that contest, against Lakewood St. Edward, the Indians scored a come-from-behind TD in the fourth quarter to win, 21-20.
