Season Highlights: The GCL again expanded as the new decade began, this time adding Hamilton Catholic to its ranks for a one-year membership. Elder was only able to schedule three league games, with old-time rivals Purcell, Roger Bacon, and St. Xavier, and finished 2-1 in the league, good for third place. Overall, the team achieved an admirable 6-2 record, adding wins over Central Vocational, Columbus Aquinas, Hughes, and Western Hills to the victories over the Cavaliers and Bombers.

In the first game of the season, the Panthers' defense provided the scoring punch as Terry Boyle pounced on a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, and Senior Captain Glenn Knecht returned an interception 22 yards for another TD. Quarterback Hal Flohn connected with Dick Witsken for a 58-yard TD pass, while Flohn and Ken Bockenstette scored on rushing plays to complete the scoring for the Purple and White.

Elder's next opponent was Columbus Aquinas, and the visitors were allowed only 43 total yards as the Panthers picked up a 13-0 victory. Hal Flohn provided the winning TD in the second quarter on an 84-yard run on a bootleg play. After dropping a close 27-22 decision to Hamilton Public on a 4th quarter TD, the Panthers rebounded to top Hughes 34-0 and Purcell 33-7. In the Purcell contest, the Panthers intercepted 3 Cavalier passes and Ken Bockenstette hit Dick Witsken for a 62-yard TD pass.

After a tough 13-7 loss to the Spartans (again on a 4th quarter TD), Elder closed out the season with shutout wins over St. Xavier and Western Hills. Ken Bockenstette intercepted three passes, returning one 41 yards for a touchdown in the St. Xavier game, while the Panthers intercepted 6 Maroon passes (including two more by Bockenstette) and recovered two fumbles to again take a one-game lead in the Elder-West High series.
