Head Coach: Walter Bartlett (Career Record: 111-95-15)
Captain: Gordon Massa
Final GCL Standings:
1. Purcell 2.
ELDER 3. Roger Bacon 4. St. Xavier
Season Highlights: The 1952 Panthers struggled to a 4-5 record overall, but league wins over Roger Bacon and St. Xavier gave the Panthers second place in the GCL. Newport Catholic departed the GCL in 1952, with only 2 wins in 10 league contests, returning the league to its four charter members. Purcell went undefeated on the season, finishing fourth in the state. Sophomore Dick Selcer led the Panthers at quarterback, throwing 4 TD passes and scoring 5 TDs along the way.
In the 40-0 victory over St. Xavier, Senior Captain Gordon Massa returned two interceptions 30 yards each for touchdowns. The Maroons broke their two game losing streak in the Thanksgiving series with a 24-21 victory, picking up 2 TDs in the fourth quarter. Don Beck was the team's leading scorer, with 6 TDs. Massa and George Aug were selected as Enquirer, Post, and Times-Star first team All-Stars; Massa was also selected All-Ohio by the Associated Press. (Senior Steve Junker went on to play at Xavier University, receiving their Most Valuable Lineman Award in 1956, and played in the NFL for the Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins.)
