Final GCL Standings
1.
ELDER 2. Roger Bacon 3. Purcell 4. St. Xavier
Season Highlights: Elder again topped the GCL in 1956, going undefeated in the league and 6-4 overall. The Panthers' ground attack gained 323 yards and 3 TDs in the team's 19-7 season-opening win over Withrow; halfback Dave Wittrock led the way with 140 yards gained. Following a close 6-0 defeat by Hamilton, the Panthers defeated Woodward 25-0, with 282 yards rushing. Elder scored first to give Massillon an early surprise, but couldn't hold on as they dropped to 2-2 on the season. Wittrock's 134 yards and 2 touchdowns led the Panthers over Dayton Fairview, 28-0. Portsmouth held the Panthers scoreless in a 13-0 loss. The team came together for the league competition, however, as three straight wins over Roger Bacon, St. Xavier and Purcell gave the Panthers the GCL crown. Jerry Ludwig's 70-yard interception return for a TD provided the spark in the win over the Bombers. The Thanksgiving Day game was billed as the battle for the City Championship, as both Western Hills and Elder had won their league titles. Over 11,000 witnessed the see-saw battle at Elder Stadium, but with less than three minutes remaining in the contest, West High scored the game winning TD and their first victory in the series in four years.
Co-Captain Jim Mullen received the team's first Most Valuable Player award, and was a consensus first-team All-City selection, playing both offensive end and defensive linebacker. Leading scorer for the season was quarterback Paul Umberg with 7 TDs and 2 conversions for 44 points.
