Season Highlights: The Panthers began the decade of the '60's with a respectable 6-4 season, but it was Purcell's turn to go undefeated and untied to win the City and GCL Championships. After scoring 106 points in their first three games and picking up two shutouts, the Panthers appeared primed for greatness. Led by Steve Tensi at quarterback, Elder shutout Chillicothe 28-0 in Game 1, behind 2 rushing TDs each by Bob Hennekes and Mike Junker. Tensi passed for 4 TDs in Game 2 against McNicholas, two each to Jim Hassett and Tom Bushman. Junker and Larry Tepe added single TDs on the ground, and Jim Dattilo pounced on a Rocket fumble in the end zone, to trounce McNick 48-0; the Panthers picked up 451 yards in total offense. And in Game 3 against Withrow, the Panthers battled a tough Tiger squad, pulling out a late insurance score on Tom Bushman's 16-yard return of a Withrow fumble. For the game, Hennekes rushed for 129 yards and Bushman for 122 to lead the ground attack.

The journey to Alliance proved to be the Panthers' undoing as they were soundly defeated 50-26. Elder managed to keep it close for three quarters, but surrendered 3 TDs in the fourth quarter to allow Alliance to pull away. Highlight for the Panthers was Bushman's 72-yard TD run. Steubenville Central Catholic then visited the Pit. The Crusaders jumped ahead early and never looked back, forcing 5 fumbles and 2 interceptions, to win 28-16.

The losing streak ended at two, however, as GCL competition began. The Panthers faced the Bombers at Xavier Stadium, and behind Tensi's 277 yards passing (completing 20 out of 26 passes) and 3 TD tosses to Dick Willett, the Purple and White picked up their first league win, 28-18. The undefeated Purcell Cavaliers than arrived at Elder Stadium, and the Panthers surprised them with two early scores, but the Cavaliers prevailed 15-14, scoring the winning TD in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers then journeyed to Bacon Stadium for the Spartans' Homecoming Celebration and were embarrassed 51-0. In Game 9, Elder overcame 3 fumbles and 2 interceptions to squeak by the Taft Senators, 16-12. And in the season finale on Thanksgiving Day, the Panthers dominated the Mustangs, 42-14, gaining 430 total yards while allowing only 116, and giving the Panthers a five-game lead in the series.

Steve Tensi's 1137 yards passing for the season brought his career total to 1987 yards, and he was named the team's Most Valuable Player and first-team All-City. (Tensi went on to play for Florida State, and was inducted into their Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981. He also played quarterback in the NFL for San Diego from 1965-66 and Denver from 1967-70.) Scoring honors for the season were shared by Terry Rogers (4 TDs and 6 conversions) and Bob Hennekes (5 TDs and 3 conversions) with 36 points. Rogers also received first team All-City honors.
