Season Highlights: The 1961 season had a shaky start when, early in the first quarter of Game 1, the Louisville St. Xavier Tigers grabbed an Elder fumble and dashed 35 yards for a touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, however, Mike Junker took the kickoff and ran 85 yards for the equalizer. Both defenses held the rest of the game, and the Panthers escaped from Louisville with a hard-fought tie.

Elder swept the next seven games, winning all but one by at least two TDs. Ned Lautenbach took the reins from Steve Tensi, and in Game 2 against Chillicothe he hit Junker with a 34-yard TD pass. Junker ran for two more scores, Dick Monnig scored on a run from mid-field, and Terry Halloran returned an interception 28 yards for a score to give the Panthers a 37-6 victory. Captain Jim Dattilo starred in Game 3 against McNicholas, scoring all 3 touchdowns in the Panthers' 20-6 win. Against Withrow, Dattilo scored twice, Lautenbach scored twice, and Bill Meier added a fifth TD as the Tigers fell, 36-12. Chaminade put up a fight, but Dattilo and Junker provided the power in the Panthers' 16-0 shutout win, each scoring one TD. Lautenbach hit 8 out of 11 passes, one to Mike Quinn for 35 yards for a touchdown, while Junker added two, and Monnig and Dattilo one each on the ground as the Panthers topped Dayton Dunbar, 36-6. And in the first GCL contest of the season, undefeated Purcell battled undefeated Elder at Xavier Stadium close for three periods, but Elder scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, on two scores by Junker and one by Quinn, to beat the Cavaliers.

Against St. Xavier, the Panthers scored on their first possession, thanks to a Jim Dattilo 49-yard run, and then held the Bombers the rest of the way. The undefeated string over two seasons ended at 10, however, at the hands of the Spartans of Roger Bacon. Elder led 6-0 at the half, but the Spartans were not to be denied, scoring 3 unanswered TDs in the second half to take the win. Bacon topped Purcell the following week, giving the Spartans the GCL title, and Elder second place. The Thanksgiving Day game was moved to Trechter Stadium with the Mustangs as hosts, but the new site was not enough to change the Mustangs' fate as they fell for the fourth straight time to the Panthers. The Panthers recovered 5 Mustang fumbles (3 by Jay Brogan), Jim Dattilo rushed for 121 yards and 1 TD, and Butch Kolleck scored two TDs on runs of 1 and 52 yards, to win the game 28-0.

Mike Junker took the honors in team scoring with 70 points (11 TDs and 2 conversions) on the season, followed by Jim Dattilo's 60 points (9 TDs and 3 conversions). Junker and Dattilo shared team MVP honors; Mike Quinn received first-team All-City honors from both the Enquirer and the Post.
