Head Coach : Virgil J. Scardina (Career Record: 62-33-5)
Captain: Jay Brogan
Final GCL Standings:
1. Roger Bacon 2. Purcell 3. ELDER 3. St. Xavier 5. Moeller 6. McNicholas 7. La Salle
Season Highlights: The 1962 season saw the birth of two new GCL schools, La Salle and Moeller, and the addition of McNicholas to the league brought membership to 7 schools. The Panthers' first victim was Louisville St. Xavier, who was defeated 29-23 at Elder Stadium. Senior fullback Tony Dattilo brought the crowd to its feet in the first quarter with an 80-yard TD run, but St. Xavier responded shortly thereafter, returning an interception of a Jay Brogan lateral 35 yards for the score. Brogan's 48-yard run, along with his 26-yard scoring pass to Dick Barnhorst and a 35-yarder to Dattilo provided the margin of victory.
The Panthers then battled new GCL members La Salle and Moeller. Elder handled La Salle with little difficulty, with Jerry Hendy leading the way with two scores, one on a 69-yard punt return. Moeller was another matter, however. Gaining only 7 yards through the air, the Panthers picked up 295 yards on the ground but were only able to score 1 touchdown, on Tony Dattilo's 4-yard run in the third quarter. A Jerry Hendy 53-yard interception return stopped the Crusaders drive late in the first half and the Panthers held on to win, 8-0.
The defenses took charge as the Bombers and Panthers battled to a scoreless tie in Game 4. The Cavaliers answered Elder's early touchdown with 5 unanswered as they swamped the Panthers, 34-6, for Elder's first loss of the season. Tony Dattilo started the Panthers' scoring drive with an interception, picked up the touchdown on a 1-yard run, and notched the 2-point conversion which turned out to be the margin of victory, as the Panthers topped McNicholas, 8-6. The powerful Roger Bacon Spartans, undefeated at the time, beat the Panthers 14-6 at Xavier Stadium, and went on to an undefeated season and the GCL title. The Panthers closed out the season with three victories over Chaminade, Taft and Western Hills, giving them a 7-2-1 record for the year and third place in the GCL.
Tony Dattilo's 6 touchdowns, 1 conversion and 2 PATs gave him 40 points and the scoring crown for the season. Quarterback Jay Brogan received the Most Valuable Player award, and both Brogan and Dattilo were named first-team defensive All-Stars by the Enquirer.
During the season, Coach Scardina announced his retirement as head coach after 10 years; his teams ended up 62-33-5 over his tenure.
