Captains: Dick Barnhorst, Jim Schaiper
Final GCL Standings:
1. Roger Bacon 2. Moeller 3. McNicholas 4. St. Xavier 5. Purcell 6.
ELDER 7. La Salle
Season Highlights: Assistant coach Dick Loechtenfeldt was named to succeed Coach Scardina. With only 3 returning starters, the Panthers struggled over the first eight games but failed to achieve a victory, gaining only a 6-6 tie with McNicholas. Shutout by Louisville Flaget and Purcell, the Panthers battled undefeated Roger Bacon, ranked second in the state at the time, to a scoreless tie after three quarters, but surrendered a touchdown following an interception of a Panther pass.
The tide finally turned, however, in Game 9, when the Panthers gave the Homecoming crowd a chance to cheer by defeating the Lancers, 23-6. Joe Brink's 49-yard touchdown run was the highlight of the contest. Elder extended its lead in the Western Hills series defeating the Mustangs, again at Trechter Stadium, 20-0. Jerry Meyer scored two touchdowns on short runs; the defense allowed only 70 total yards, with fumble recoveries by Jerry Reinstatler and Ken Kerley and interceptions by Jim Schaiper and Dan Daly keeping the ball in the Panthers' hands.
Junior Jerry Meyer led the team in scoring with 5 TDs and 30 points. Jerry Reinstatler (Offense) and Den Borchers (Defense) shared the team's Most Valuable Player honors.
