Season Highlights: The success of the 1964 season provided a stark contrast to the struggle of the previous season. The Panthers opened with shutout wins over La Salle and Woodward. Ray Baur and Wayne Davidson shared the quarterbacking duties, as a balanced rushing and passing attack, along with solid defense, brought home two victories. In Game 1, Jerry Meyer's 2 rushing scores, as well as a Davidson-to-Jim Murray TD pass, along with a 40-yard interception return by Dave Ott and 3 fumble recoveries by Gene "Butch" Otting, Ed Otten and Dick Braddick, gave the Panthers a 20-0 win over La Salle. The Panthers gained 446 yards on offense and scores from Otting, Ott and Murray to top the Bulldogs, 21-0.
In Game 3, at Middletown, Jerry Meyer scored 4 touchdowns on short runs to lead the Panthers over the Middies, 34-12. The GCL schedule began in Game 4 against Moeller, and Meyer scored three more TDs in the 27-7 Panther win. Following a scoreless first half in Game 5, the Bombers took the lead in the third quarter following a fumble recovery, but the pass for the two-point conversion was incomplete. The Panthers responded in the fourth quarter as Ray Baur rushed 9 yards for the TD and kicked the extra point to seal the victory.
The Panthers' winning streak grew to six as the Cavaliers of Purcell were defeated, then to seven as the Rockets of McNicholas fell, and to eight when the Panthers topped Chaminade. In the Chaminade game, Jerry Meyer rushed for 132 yards and one of the two Panther scores; the other was tallied when Ray Baur fell on a Meyer fumble in the end zone. Elder then traveled to Bacon Stadium to face the 7-1 Spartans. Bacon scored early in the game on a 59-yard pass play, and with the help of a downpour, Bacon's defense held the Panthers scoreless with only 165 yards total offense. As a result, the two teams shared the GCL title with 5-1 league records. The Panthers topped Western Hills in the Thanksgiving Day clash, 12-0, on Ray Baur's 1-yard touchdown plunge in the first quarter and "Butch" Otting's 60-yard punt return for a touchdown with four minutes left in the game.
Halfback Jerry Meyer's 12 rushing touchdowns earned him the team scoring title with 72 points, as well as first-team All-City honors from the Post. Offensive tackle and future head coach Ray Bachus was named to the first-team All-Stars by both the Post and Enquirer. Otting, the team's Most Valuable Player, was named to the first-team All-City defensive squad by the Enquirer, and he received the Southwestern Ohio Football Coaches Association's "That's My Boy" Award for the most outstanding scholar-football player in Southwestern Ohio.
