Season Highlights: After two years at the helm, Coach Dick Loechtenfeldt passed the reins to Assistant Coach Mike Honold. Honold guided the team to a 7-3 record in his first season, and a 4-2 mark in the GCL, good for third place. Coach Gerry Faust's Moeller Crusaders went 10-0 for the first time and won the GCL crown. The Panthers' defense allowed only 40 points on the season, shutting out their opponents 5 times.

The 1965 Panthers dropped their first game to Dayton Roosevelt, 14-0, but then defeated the Woodward Bulldogs by an identical score. Against La Salle, Ray Baur kicked the game-winning extra point as the Lancers fell, 7-6. Moeller's conversion provided the margin of victory as they topped the Panthers 8-6; sophomore QB Ron Krechting's pass for Elder's conversion following Ray Baur's TD run was intercepted. Baur scored both TDs in the win over St. Xavier, gaining 134 yards on the ground. St. Xavier's attempt to tie the game was stopped at Elder's one-foot line by a Dennis Grawe interception. Baur again led the ground attack with 157 yards against Purcell. Pat O'Brien and John Vignale added scores to Baur's to close out the Cavaliers 19-0. The Panthers raised their record to 6-2 with successive shutouts of McNicholas and Louisville De Sales. Roger Bacon turned the tables in Game 9, when they shutdown the Panthers' scoring machine and scored a fourth quarter TD to win 6-0. To finish the season, Elder won its seventh straight on Thanksgiving, led by Baur's 145 rushing yards, 20-0.

The season scoring crown went to Ray Baur with 59 points on 8 TDs and 11 extra points kicked. Baur shared the team's Most Valuable Player honors with Tackle Bob Geers. Both Baur and Geers received All-City recognition; Geers on the Enquirer and Post's first teams, Baur on the second teams.
