Season Highlights: Coach Honold's Panthers improved on the previous season's record in 1966, finishing with an 8-2 mark; their 5-2 GCL record was good for a tie for second with Roger Bacon and Newport Catholic, who returned to the league after a 15-year absence. Moeller repeated as league champion, even though they were defeated by the Panthers for their only league setback.

In Game 1, the Panthers faced Middletown at the Pit, and Ron Krechting's 138 yards passing resulted in touchdowns by Co-Captain Tom Aug and Bob Christophel. Aug scored a second on the ground, and Mike Minges scored number four on a 75-yard punt return. The De Sales game was marred by 8 turnovers, 4 by each team, but the Panthers ended up on top 12-8 when Co-Captain Den Grawe recovered a Stallions fumble on the De Sales' one-yard line, followed by Ron Krechting's score on the next play.

Elder notched their second shutout of the season when sophomore halfback Larry Parker provided the touchdown in the second quarter against Roger Bacon and the defense did the rest. Against the La Salle Lancers, Tom Aug rushed for 109 yards, while Len Schroer's 2 TDs and scores by Jerry Holthaus and Bob Christophel provided the points as the Panthers won their fourth straight, 26-0.

The Panther defense held the Crusaders to only 52 total yards; Ed Link, Parker and Schroer scored on short runs to win the team's fifth in a row, 21-6. But the Bombers of St. Xavier stopped the Panthers' streak with an 8-7 heartbreaker, on a bad snap from center followed by a Bomber recovery on the Elder 11-yard line. The Bombers scored on an 11-yard pass on the next play and won the game on a successful conversion pass. Purcell and McNicholas were the Panthers' next victims. Krechting passed for 225 yards against Purcell (completing 14 of 22), and 243 yards against McNicholas (11 of 21). Highlight of the McNicholas game was Felton Brown's 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Newport Catholic gained a share of second place in the GCL by beating the Panthers, 27-14. Krechting completed 18 out of 36 passes for 247 passing yards, but the Thoroughbreds held Elder to -8 yards on the ground to seal the win. The Panthers found success both on the ground and in the air in the final game, gaining 439 total yards and defeating the Mustangs on Thanksgiving, this year back at Elder Stadium, 48-8. The defense held Western Hills to only 65 total yards; one of the Panthers' two interceptions was returned 45 yards for a touchdown by Pat Herron.

On the season, Ron Krechting passed for 1499 yards and 13 touchdowns, completing 101 out of 183 passes for a 55.2 % completion percentage. Tom Aug was the leading scorer with 5 TDs and 3 conversions for 36 points, and was named team MVP and the GCL's Outstanding Back. Offensive End Bob Christophel was named first-team All-Star by the Post and Enquirer; Aug was named to the first team by the Enquirer. (Co-Captain Tom Aug is the son of George Aug, Sr., who served as the team's captain in 1928.)
