Head Coach: Ray Bachus (Career Record: 56-23-1)
Captains: Dan O'Brien, Tom Klusman
Final GCL Standings:
1. Moeller 2. La Salle 3.
ELDER 4. St. Xavier 5. Roger Bacon
Season Highlights: With Co-Captains Dan O'Brien at quarterback and Tom Klusman on the defensive line, the 1982 Panthers first took the field against Western Hills at Elder Stadium. Elder extended their winning streak to four, with a 28-7 win over the Mustangs. Doug Schroer, with 147 yards, and Bryan Pitchford, with 130 yards, led the ground assault. Pitchford scored 3 TDs from within the 5-yard line, while Schroer's single score was made on a 55-yard run. Mike Irwin was perfect, kicking 4 PATs in four attempts.
Game 2 was an offensive war, with the Panthers gaining 332 total yards against the Bulldogs 350. Two Pitchford rushing TDs and Klusman's punt block, which led to a safety, made the score 16-0 in the first quarter. An O'Brien-to-Jon Sagers 15-yard scoring pass in the second quarter made the score 23-13 at half-time. That lead was just enough as the Panthers held on to win, 23-20.
The Panthers were forced to come from behind to defeat the Spartans of Lima Senior in Game 3. Down 12-7 at the half, the Panthers scored 22 unanswered points, behind the rushing of Bryan Pitchford (183 yards) and Doug Schroer (110 yards). Pitchford scored three touchdowns and Schroer one in the contest. Elder then traveled to Canton to face state champion Canton McKinley, and were handed their first defeat of the season, 25-0. McKinley's offense totaled 317 yards against the Panthers' 173.
The annual Moeller-Elder clash was next on the schedule, again at Nippert Stadium. The Crusaders, coached by former Elder assistant Steve Klonne, dominated the game from the beginning, racking up 31 points before the Panthers could score late in the fourth quarter. Final score: 31-7, Moeller.
Elder lost the following week to La Salle, on the strength of a 28-yard La Salle field goal in the fourth quarter. Doug Schroer gained 132 yards rushing to lead both teams, but the Panthers ended up on the short end of the final score, 13-10. The Panthers returned to the winner's circle against Roger Bacon, 28-14. Tailback Doug Schroer and fullback Jay Barnhorst each contributed two TDs. Bill Hemmer made three interceptions to lead the defense over the Spartans.
Elder traveled to Fairborn for Game 8, carrying a 4-3 record. Doug Schroer led the offense with 3 touchdowns, one on a 54-yard run; Mark Wills and Jon Sagers also added touchdowns. Mike Irwin kicked for 10 points in the contest, on 4 PATs and two field goals of 34 and 37 yards, to make the final score 40-7, Panthers. Game 9 brought the Bombers of St. Xavier to the Pit. Mike Irwin did it all, picking up 2 interceptions, blocking a Bomber field goal attempt, and kicking a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter to account for all the scoring in the game. The Panthers gained 225 yards against the Bombers' 193, and Irwin's field goal was the difference, 3-0 Elder. Oak Hills and Elder met for the fourth time, and Elder evened the series at 2-2 with a 21-6 victory at Nippert Stadium. Schroer scored twice, Pitchford once, and Irwin kicked 3 PATs, as each ended his Elder career with a victory.
Doug Schroer led the team in scoring with 66 points, on 11 TDs; Bryan Pitchford had 9 TDs and 1 conversion for 56 points. Mike Irwin kicked 23 PATs and 4 field goals for 35 points on the season. Dan O'Brien passed for 955 yards on 65 completions in 153 attempts; his favorite receiver was Jon Sagers who caught 23 passes for 372 yards. Schroer was the team's leading rusher, with 178 carries for 1279 yards, just behind Larry Parker's 1283 yards in the school record book. Bryan Pitchford's 99 carries netted 584 yards. Mike Irwin's 119 tackle points and 7 interceptions anchored the defense, followed closely by Tom Klusman's 111 tackle points. Jay Barnhorst punted 44 times for 1696 yards for a 38.5 yard average.
Moeller and Princeton squared off in the regional final in 1982, with Moeller taking the victory, 33-20. The Crusaders went on to shutout Gahanna Lincoln, 38-0, in the state semi-final game, and won the state championship over Massillon Washington, 35-14.
