Season Highlights: The 1983 Panther Co-Captains were linebacker Dan Hollstegge and guard Tim James. The opening game against Western Hills found the Panthers comfortably ahead 21-3 midway through the third quarter. But the Mustangs fought back, scoring two touchdowns before the quarter was over to make the score 21-17. The Panther defense stiffened, and the offense scored an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter on a Chris Fox 3-yard run, to make the final score 28-17. The Panthers record rose to 2-0 as they topped the Bulldogs of Woodward, 19-7. Tim Tepe and Mike Kern scored rushing touchdowns in the first half. Senior quarterback Chris Nie hit Dave Lind with a 5-yard TD pass to close out the scoring.

Elder scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to beat Lima Senior, 35-21. Following a Chris Nie-to-Ken Schutte TD pass of 39 yards, the Panthers' scoring stayed on the ground, behind two scores by Ken Miller, and single scores by Billy Meier and Tim Tepe. Meier's 50-yard TD run comprised the biggest chunk of his 102-yard total. The Canton McKinley Bulldogs visited the Pit for Game 4. Although the Bulldogs outgained the Panthers, 218-184, the Panthers came away with the win, 14-7. Mark Rosenberger scored on a 27-yard return of a blocked punt. Dave Lind's 5-yard TD reception from Chris Nie, and Dan Jacobs' 2 PATs rounded out the scoring for Elder.

The Elder-Moeller clash was moved to the friendly confines of Elder Stadium, and a capacity crowd watched as the Panthers were overwhelmed, 42-7. The only bright spot for Elder was a third-quarter score on a 1-yard run by Chris Fox. La Salle took the next game, 20-17, as one fumble and four interceptions took their toll on the Panthers. In Game 7, the lead alternated between the Panthers and the Spartans, but at the final horn Roger Bacon was on top, 16-13. Trailing 13-9 with under two minutes left, Bacon completed a 55-yard TD pass to win the game.

The Panthers then faced Mt. Healthy for the first time in its history, and topped the Owls, 14-6. Billy Meier ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns, and Mike Kern had 111 yards, to lead the offense. The Panthers picked up their only GCL win of the season, gaining a tie for fourth in the league, by defeating St. Xavier, 14-12, in Game 9. Billy Meier's 53-yard TD run opened the scoring in the second quarter for Elder, and Ken Miller scored in the third to put the Panthers up for good. Dan Jacobs' two PATs, and a missed field goal and an unsuccessful conversion run by the Bombers were the difference in the game. The season ended on a low note for the Panthers as they lost to Oak Hills, 14-0. Five turnovers by Elder spelled their fourth defeat of the season. Billy Meier rushed for 165 yards in the losing effort.

Senior Billy Meier led the team in scoring, rushing and receiving. He picked up 36 points on 6 TDs, 871 yards on 160 carries, and 586 yards on 37 pass receptions. Chris Nie passed for 925 yards on 65 completions out of 155 attempts. Dan Hollstegge's 178 tackle points led the team. Briggs Pille had 129 tackle points and 4 interceptions. Todd Tieman's 108 tackle points combined with 2 fumble recoveries and 3 interceptions.

Moeller and Princeton represented Region 4 in the state playoffs, but this time it was Princeton's turn to go upstate, as they beat Moeller in the regional final, 28-21. Princeton then defeated Fremont Ross in the state semi-final, 35-7, and went on to win the state title over Akron Garfield, 24-6.
