ELDER
Season Highlights: Head Coach Ray Bachus resigned following the 1983 season, and Elder assistant John Owens was named to succeed him. Led by Captains John Murphy and Todd Tieman, the 1984 Panthers finished the season at 2-6-1, winless in the GCL for the first time since 1958.
In his first game as head coach, Coach Owens saw his team come from behind to tie Western Hills 12-12, in the first game of the series played at Western Hills since 1941. It was only the second tie in the history of the rivalry, the first occurring in 1934. Down 12-0, Dan Jacobs kicked field goals of 42 and 41 yards, at that time the longest in school history, to put the Panthers on the scoreboard. Quarterback Nick Gramke tied the game in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run. The kick for the extra point failed, leaving the game tied.
Coach Owens picked up his first win in Game 2, against Woodward. Trailing 13-0 at the half, the second half was all Elder, as Tim Tepe scored 2 TDs, Gramke scored a third, and Jacobs kicked a 24-yard field goal and 3 PATs, to make the final score, 24-13. Tepe rushed for 106 yards in the contest, Kevin Niehaus snagged two Bulldog passes. Game 3 was a field day for Lima Senior; the Spartans took the game, 47-14, accumulating 499 yards of offense against 178 for Elder.
Roger Bacon took Game 4, 17-9, as Dan Jacobs kicked his second 42-yard field goal of the season. With Mike Goedde at quarterback, the Panthers trounced Hughes, 42-6. Six Panthers scored single touchdowns: Mike Kern, Tim Tepe, Mike Goedde, Scott Wegman, Jude Schleibaum (on a 59-yard pass from Goedde), and Todd Tieman (on a 29-yard interception return). Dan Jacobs kicked 3 PATs, and Andy Theuerling kicked his first extra point.
The Panthers scored 7 points in each quarter against the Bombers, but St. Xavier's offense was too much to overcome as the Panthers fell, 35-28. Junior Dennis McLean starred for the Panthers with three touchdowns, on runs of 28, 49 and 70 yards. Mike Luebbe also scored for Elder on a 16-yard interception return. Trailing 10-9 entering the fourth quarter, La Salle exploded for 22 points to overwhelm Elder 31-10. Quarterback Jeff Bleh completed his first TD pass to Dennis McLean for 4 yards in the game. Against the Moeller Crusaders in Game 9, the Panthers were never in the game, losing 56-14. Nick Gramke passed for 2 touchdowns, to Steve Zahneis for 64 yards and to John Robb for 7 yards. The final game of the season was again opposite Oak Hills, and the Panthers allowed the Highlanders to score 15 second-half points to drop the contest, 15-14.
Tim Tepe led the Panthers' scoring for the season with 42 points on 7 TDs. Dan Jacob's 17 PATs and 5 field goals gave him 32 points for the campaign. Nick Gramke was the team's leading passer, accumulating 687 yards on 44 completions out of 99 attempts. Tepe was also the leading rusher with 118 carries for 575 yards, while Scott James was the leading pass receiver with 12 receptions for 180 yards. Todd Tieman led the team with 101 tackle points, followed by Tom Farrell with 85.
In the state playoffs, Moeller was defeated in the regional final by Centerville. The Elks lost in the state semi-final to Toledo St. Francis, who went on to win the state title over North Canton Hoover
