Head Coach: John Owens (Career Record: 6-12-1)
Captains: Don Taylor, Tom Tepe, Pat Good
Final GCL Standings
1. Moeller 2. La Salle 3. St. Xavier 4.
ELDER 5. Roger Bacon
Season Highlights: Coach Owens led the 1985 Panthers in his second season as head coach, assisted by Tri-Captains Don Taylor (defensive tackle), Tom Tepe (defensive back) and Pat Good (offensive lineman). Western Hills won the opening game of the season, 35-14, marking the first time the Mustangs won at Elder Stadium since 1958. The offense gained only 114 on a tough Mustang defense; Jeff Bleh and Dennis McLean provided the only two Panther touchdowns on short runs.
The Purple and White rebounded in Game 2, defeating Woodward, 32-6. Jeff Bleh passed for 123 yards, completing 7 of 16, and 1 TD pass to Nick Faillace for 17 yards. McLean, Bleh and Tepe scored TDs on the ground. Andy Theuerling kicked 3 PATs and a school-record 45-yard field goal (a record which would stand until 2008). Sophomore Jeff Singler intercepted two Bulldog passes to spark the defense. Elder had the lead over Lima Senior entering the second half but couldn't hold on, as the Spartans scored 8 fourth-quarter points to win, 14-7. The Panther offense outgained the Spartans', 233-134, to no avail.
Dayton Dunbar visited the Pit for Game 4. The Panthers scored first, on a Greg Theders 2-yard run. Dunbar took a 14-6 lead, until Jeff Bleh tossed a 40-yard TD pass to Ken Schneider to tie the game at half-time. Dunbar then retook the lead 28-14, but the Panthers scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one on a Joe Baarlaer 1-yard run, and the second on a 1-yard run by Jeff Bleh with four seconds left. Andy Theuerling kicked the extra point to send the Panthers into their first overtime game in school history. The Panthers won the game on Theuerling's 31-yard field goal. Bleh passed for 224 yards in the game; Singler picked up two more interceptions.
The quest for the GCL title began against Roger Bacon, and the Panthers came out on top, 35-14. Highlight of the game was John Scherch's 54-yard interception return for a touchdown, one of two interceptions Scherch had in the game. Purcell-Marian then visited the Pit, for the first time since 1979, and defeated Elder, 28-16. Dennis McLean, on a 67-yard run, and Ken Schneider, on a 40-yard reception from Bleh, scored for Elder.
The Bombers passed for 335 yards and swamped the Panthers, 28-9, in Game 7. The Panthers scored on a 55-yard pass from Bleh to Theders, and on a 40-yard Theuerling field goal. La Salle, an improved team at 6-1, dropped the Panthers at the Lancers' home field, 23-15. The Lancers gained 254 yards through the air and led from start to finish, although the Panthers scored 15 second-half points.
The Crusaders came to the Pit for Game 9, and their GCL winning streak continued, as the defeated the Panthers, 42-7. Elder ended the season on a winning note as they defeated the visiting Highlanders of Oak Hills, 7-3. All the scoring occurred in the second half, with the Panthers' final TD of the season coming on a 40-yard TD pass from Jeff Bleh to Ken Schneider. Theuerling kicked the PAT to ice the victory.
The scoring leader for the season was Ken Schneider, with 42 points on 7 touchdowns. Jeff Bleh completed 108 passes in 222 attempts for 1592 yards, placing him just behind Scott Moeschl's 1622 yards in the school record book. Dennis McLean led the team in rushing, with 134 carries for 426 yards; Schneider was the leading receiver, making 31 catches and picking up 545 yards. Brian Henke led the defense with 183 tackle points.
The state playoffs were again expanded, to include four teams from each region. The Moeller Crusaders again marched to the state championship game, defeating Fairfield, 28-12, Princeton, 24-12, and Troy, 21-10. In the state title game, the Crusaders gained revenge on the Canton McKinley Bulldogs (who defeated them for the state title in 1981), winning the championship, 35-11.
