Season Highlights: The Panthers just missed the playoffs in 1994, and the 1995 Panthers set out to return to the tournament for the first time since 1991. Defensive back Tom Goettke, quarterback John Lammers, and defensive tackle Brian Schmutte were chosen to lead the team as Tri-Captains. With the returning Beau Parton at wide receiver, Brandon Sowers to lead the running attack, and an experienced quarterback in John Lammers, all the pieces seemed to be in place for a run at the playoffs.
The season opened again with Middletown, this time at the Pit. The Panthers put together a masterful 40-0 trouncing of the Middies. Lammers passed for 181 yards and 3 TDs, two to Beau Parton (29 and 49 yards) and one to Dan Ritter (4 yards). Sowers rushed for 97 yards in the game, and added three scores, on runs of 2, 1, and 2 yards. Sophomore Dan DeFranco kicked 3 PATs and Kevin Dwyer added a fourth, as the offense racked up 412 total yards against 97 for Middletown. Jim Brogan recovered a Middie fumble, and Eric Conroy picked off a pass from the visitors.
The 2-0 Boone County Rebels arrived at the Pit the following week. The teams battled scoreless in the first quarter, then each team scored a touchdown in the second quarter, Elder scoring on a Lammers-to-Sowers 26-yard pass. In the third quarter, with the score 7-7, Pat Eagan scored his first career TD on a 35-yard pass from Lammers; Dan DeFranco's second PAT put the Panthers up 14-7. The Rebels scored early in the fourth quarter, but missed the try for the extra point. The Elder offense worked the clock for the final 5:28 of the game and never allowed the Rebels the chance to score again. The defense played a big role in the victory, with a fumble recovery by Mike Oliver and 3 interceptions, 2 by Adam Ryan and one by Jason Ott, playing linebacker as a junior. Sowers totaled 179 yards rushing for the game.
The 67th meeting of the Mustangs and the Panthers returned to Elder Stadium. The Panthers shutout West High, 21-0, on 446 total yards of offense. Brandon Sowers contributed 150 yards on the ground and 94 yards receiving, as John Lammers engineered the victory. Sowers scored two TDs on receptions of 15 and 18 yards from Lammers, and Lammers added a TD on a 1-yard run. Kevin Dwyer and Mike Oliver recovered fumbles to aid the effort.
Against Withrow on their home field, Lammers led another shutout, 33-0. The Elder QB passed for 106 yards and 3 TDs, completing 7 of 9. Sowers, with 2 TDs rushing and 1 receiving, and Beau Parton with 2 TD receptions, combined for 30 points; Dan DeFranco added 3 PATs. The defense continued to force turnovers as Dwyer and Marc Broering recovered Tiger fumbles and Eric Conroy had another interception.
At the halfway point in the season, Elder traveled to La Salle. Lammers passed for 324 yards and 3 TDs (2 to Parton and 1 to Brian Bain). Parton accumulated 158 yards on 6 receptions, while Sowers totaled 104 yards rushing and 3 TDs, one coming on a 70-yard run. Brian's conversion as well as DeFranco's 3 PATs and 23-yard field goal gave the Panthers more than enough to trounce the Lancers, 46-28, and take their record to 5-0.
Moeller, at 2-3, was in the midst of a dismal season for them when they arrived at the Pit. Elder led after the first quarter, 14-10, on a 36-yard TD pass from Lammers to Parton, a 1-yard Sowers run, and 2 DeFranco PATs, but controlled the rest of the game, scoring 2 TDs and a field goal before the Panthers could answer with a late 35-yard Lammers-to-Sowers score. Lammers completed an amazing 13 of 14 passes for 250 yards, but the team was held to only 9 yards on the ground. Sowers rushed for 131 yards on six carries; Tom Goettke intercepted a Moeller pass on the defense. The loss left the Panthers in a tie with the La Salle Lancers for the GCL title.
The Panthers rebounded against the 4-2 St. Xavier Bombers, winning on the road, 37-9. Lammers passed for 4 TDs, 3 to Parton and 1 to Sowers. Sowers totaled 116 yards on 31 carries, and added another TD rushing. DeFranco kicked 3 PATs, and a 28-yard field goal; Adam Ryan kicked a fourth PAT to complete the rout. Marc Broering added two fumble recoveries to his total, and Ryan added a third.
Purcell-Marian next visited the Pit, and were defeated, 27-0. Sowers led the offensive effort, acquiring 164 yards on 19 carries and 3 TDs; Brad Ryan added a fourth TD on a 6-yard run. A Parton 2-point conversion and a DeFranco PAT ended the scoring. A fumble recovery by Brian Schmutte and a third Eric Conroy interception were defensive highlights.
The Panthers' 9-game regular season schedule ended at Oak Hills, and the Panthers' passing attack led to victory number 8, 28-0. Lammers hit on 14 passes in 20 attempts for 252 yards, and 4 touchdowns, two on passes of 63 and 67 yards. Parton caught 7 of Lammers' passes for 148 yards and 2 TDs, Sowers and Bain were the targets for the other scores. Dan DeFranco hit 4 PATs for a perfect night for him. The Highlanders were held to 205 yards, aided by fumble recoveries by Conroy and Broering, and interceptions by Conroy (2) and Goettke.
Colerain completed the season with a 10-0 record, and were named city champs. Lakota, Kettering Fairmont, and Elder were second, third, and fourth, respectively, so the Cardinals were paired with Elder in the first round of the playoffs. In a wind-swept Nippert Stadium, Lammers had difficulty passing, gaining only 96 yards through the air; he was intercepted 3 times. Colerain controlled the ground game, holding Elder to -2 yards rushing. The Cardinals racked up 227 yards total, and single scores in the second and third quarters. Elder's only TD came in the fourth quarter, on a Lammers-to-Parton 11-yard pass, as the Panthers tried to launch a comeback, but it was to no avail. Elder was defeated, 14-7.
Colerain went on to defeat Lakota and Brunswick to get to the state championship game, but were disqualified when it was discovered that Colerain had played with an ineligible player for the entire season. Brunswick replaced Colerain in the title game and was defeated by Cleveland St. Ignatius, 41-21. (Elder was credited with a win in the playoff game against Colerain as a result of the forfeit.)
Brandon Sowers was the leading scorer for the season, with 20 TDs and 1 conversion for 122 points. Sowers totaled 190 carries for 981 yards rushing. Beau Parton had 12 TDs and 1 conversion for 74 points, and had 33 pass receptions for 646 yards. John Lammers passed for 1635 yards and 23 TDs on 101 completions in 147 attempts, a 68.7% completion percentage, setting a school record in that category. Jason Ott anchored the defense, with 95 tackles and 1 interception. Mark Becker had 77 tackles and 1 sack. Tom Goettke totaled 69 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 interceptions. (Goettke continued his football career as a cadet at West Point.) Marc Broering led the team with 7 sacks, and 5 fumble recoveries. Eric Conroy led the team in interceptions with 5. Parton punted 20 times for 713 yards and an average of 35.7 yards per punt.
