Senior Derrick Ventre took over the helm as quarterback of the 2006 edition of the Panthers, and led them to a win in their first game against the Covington Catholic Colonels. The game was the finale of the 9th edition of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown, played at UC's Nippert Stadium. The offense showed some early nervousness against the Colonels (who were playing their second game of the season) and coughed up the ball on the opening kickoff, leading to a Cov Cath field goal. The Panther defense showed a toughness which would hold the Colonels scoreless while the offense got on track. The score remained 3-0 into the third quarter, when Ventre and senior running back Pat Williams led the scoring drive to take the lead, which culminated with an 11-yard pass to junior tight end Kyle Rudolph. The extra point was wide, and the score stood at 6-3, Elder. The Panthers scored again in the fourth quarter, this time on a Pat Williams 6-yard run. Senior Ben VanOflen's extra point attempt was good, and the score was Elder 13, Cov Cath 3. The Colonels reached the red zone twice in late attempts to score, but each time penalties and turnovers stymied their efforts. (Unfortunately for the Colonels, their scoring drives ended right in front of the Elder student cheering section, which did a fine job of making Cov Cath's ability to hear their QB's signals difficult if not impossible.) The Elder defense was strong throughout, led by senior DB Ross Metz' interception and junior LB Steve Hengehold's two fumble recoveries. Williams had 115 yards on 31 carries to lead the offense.
The Panthers faced another tough Kentucky team in Game 2, the Highlands Bluebirds. Elder carried a 3-0 record against Highlands into the game, but this matchup was the first to be played on Highlands' home field. Playing in a cold mist most of the evening, both teams struggled to maintain control of the ball and turnovers were a key to the outcome. Highlands struck first, driving to a TD on their first possession to take a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, following a three-and-out series, Michael Cooke's punt struck a Highlands player and was pounced upon by Eric Linneman on the Highlands 19-yard-line. Derrick Ventre then hit Kyle Rudolph in the end zone and the game was tied at 7. After the halftime break, Highlands again took the lead with a field goal, but the Panther offense completed an 8-play drive, ending with a Patrick Williams 1-yard run for the touchdown. Elder 14, Highlands 10. The Panthers added an insurance score in the fourth quarter when another Cooke punt was fumbled at the five-yard line; Williams scored again two plays later, and Elder led 21-10. Highlands refused to quit, and scored a TD and a two-point conversion to make the score 21-18. Elder recovered the ensuing onside kick, but were forced to punt the ball away, giving Highlands another chance to win the contest. But Ross Metz picked off a Bluebird pass to end the scoring drive and seal the victory for the Panthers.
Oak Hills visited The Pit for Game 3, and the Panthers provided a rude welcome for new Highlanders head coach Kurry Commins. Scoring on their first three possessions, the Panthers defeated the Highlanders 42-7, for their 21st straight win in the series, and taking the team to 3-0 for the first time since 2001. Pat Williams scored four TDs, on runs of 10, 5, 2, and 6 yards, Derrick Ventre scored his first TD of the season on a 3-yard QB keeper, and junior QB John Groene scored on an 8-yard run to account for the Panthers' 6 TDs. Ben Van Oflen was a perfect 6-for-6 in extra points. Williams had his way with the Oak Hills defense, running 18 times for 138 yards. Ventre completed 12 of 19 passes for 175 yards.
Game 4 for the Panthers was part of the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge, pitting Elder against the Concord, California De La Salle Spartans. The Spartans were ranked 5th in the country by USA Today entering the game, and they lived up to their ranking, besting the Panthers, 56-38. Elder spotted the Spartans two quick TDs, but gradually worked their way back into the contest, on a Ross Metz 25-yard fumble recovery for a TD, and a Pat Williams 1-yard TD run. The score was 14-12 with 5:11 left in the second quarter, following a missed PAT and a failed two-point conversion attempt. The Spartans scored two more times before the end of the first half, and the score was 28-12 at the half. Two more De La Salle TDs at the start of the third quarter extended the Spartans' lead, but the Panthers kept fighting, with Williams scoring again late in the third, junior QB John Groene scoring on an 8-yard run, Kyle Rudolph scoring on an 8-yard TD pass, and Andrew Mellott's 32-yard TD pass reception from Groene. The Spartans scored two more TDs along the way, and the final score in the shootout was De La Salle 56, Elder 38. [It was not a good day for the GCL in the Ohio vs. USA Challenge, with Moeller losing 21-20 to #2-ranked Byrnes (SC), and St. Xavier losing to #3-rated Lakeland (FL), 25-22 in overtime.]
The Panthers faced La Salle, torrential rain, a day-long delay, and double overtime to pick up a win in Game 5. The game began on a rainy Friday night at The Pit, with junior John Groene at the helm for the Panthers; Derrick Ventre was sidelined with a broken hand suffered in the De La Salle game the previous week. After reaching the second quarter with 4:59 left, lightning brought about a 30-minute delay, with the score tied at 7-7. Continued lightning and rain resulted in a suspension of the game until Saturday night. When the game resumed, the defenses took charge and the score remained tied at 7 until five minutes left in the fourth quarter, when both teams scored twice and regulation ended with the game tied, 21-21. In the first overtime, both teams scored to make the score, 28-28. In the second overtime, Elder got the ball first and scored on a 2-yard Groene-to-Kyle Rudolph pass; Ben Van Oflen's kick was good, and Elder led 35-28. La Salle also scored on their possession, but missed the final PAT, and the game ended 35-34, Elder. Groene completed 25 of 36 passes for 271 yards and four TDs, 3 of them to Rudolph and 1 to Nick Olthaus. Groene also rushed 24 times for 74 yards and a TD. Olthaus caught 9 passes for 130 yards; RB Pat Williams was held to only 25 yards on 12 carries.
The defending state champion St. Xavier Bombers visited The Pit for Game 6, and left no doubt they were anxious to repeat their championship run. Taking advantage of a fumbled punt in the first quarter, the Bombers took the lead 7-0, and then scored again before the first quarter ended. A field goal just before the end of the half put the Bombers up 17-0 at halftime, and another score just after the start of the fourth quarter made it 24-0. The Panthers finally was able to move the ball against the huge Bomber defense with about 10 minutes left in the game, and were able to score twice, the second time following a fumble recovery. St. Xavier added another late score and the final was 30-15.
The Panthers faced the Moeller Crusaders at UC's Nippert Stadium in Game 7. The Crusaders' defense proved to be the Panthers' undoing, as they sacked QB John Groene 13 times, intercepted him twice, and blocked a punt en route to a 31-13 Moeller victory. Elder was down 7-0 in the second quarter when they finally got on the scoreboard, as a result of a 48-yard TD pass from Groene to Nick Olthaus. The subsequent PAT was blocked. Moeller then went on to score 24 unanswered points, until late in the game when Elder's Pat Williams scored on a 3-yard run.
The Panthers traveled to Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis to face the Bishop Chatard Trojans in Game 8, a team they had defeated in each of their previous four meetings. The Trojans entered the game at 7-1, and had a different outcome in mind, as they completely stifled the Panthers' offense, allowing only 15-of-37 pass completions for 124 yards and 36 total yards rushing, shutting out the Panthers 24-0. It was the Panthers' first shutout since 1997 (a 17-0 defeat at the hands of St. Xavier) and only the second shutout in Coach Ramsey's 116 games as Elder's head coach. The Trojans picked off three John Groene passes (one of which was returned 64 yards for a TD) and blocked a punt en route to the victory.
The Cleveland Benedictine Bengals visited The Pit for Game 9, carrying a 1-7 record, but with a 1-0 record against the Panthers. Elder gained some measure of revenge for last year's defeat, however, by dominating the game, and winning 35-14. Senior QB Derrick Ventre returned to action following his injury, and had 6 completons in 7 attempts for 79 yards and an 11-yard TD pass to Kyle Rudolph. Ventre gave way to John Groene, who was a perfect 4-for-4 through the air, gaining 95 yards and hitting sophomore Josh Jones for a 56-yard score. Pat Williams added two TDs on the ground, and senior Joe Del Prince picked up 51 yards and 1 TD on 6 carries.
Game 10 brought the Panthers' oldest rival, the Western Hills Mustangs, to The Pit. After a slow start in intermittent rain, the Panthers got on track in the second quarter, scoring 30 points on two 5-yard runs by Pat Williams, a 5-yard run by John Groene, a 2-yard return of a blocked punt by Tim Berter, a safety, and four PATs by Ben Van Oflen. The defense and the weather kept the Mustangs scoreless, and Elder led 30-0 at the half. Coach Doug Ramsey rotated just about every member of the team into the game in the second half, and Joe Del Prince scored two rushing TDs, and Rob Scully returned an interception 20 yards for another score. Van Oflen kicked three more PATs and the game ended, 51-0.
