Season Highlights: Coach Doug Ramsey's third season as head coach offered a tough, nine-game schedule, with renewed hopes of returning to the playoffs: the field was enlarged to the top 8 teams. Led by Co-captains LB Pat Brunner, OL Andy Christopfel, and TE Joel Wainscott, the Panthers faced another first-time opponent in Game 1: the Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit Warriors. The Panthers dominated the Warriors in the third game of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown held at UC's Nippert Stadium on August 28, winning the contest handily, 35-7. Senior Quarterback Collin Carey led the offense, which picked up 419 total yards. Carey completed 13 of 23 passes for 229 yards and five TDs in his first varsity start, and was named the Most Valuable Player in the game. The tough defense held the Warriors to 120 yards rushing and 95 yards passing, and one score late in the contest. Elder TDs were scored by Phil Rueve with 2 (44-yard and 10-yard passes from Carey), Joel Wainscott (4-yard pass), Chris Braun (15-yard pass), and Brett Mezger (5 yard pass). Tom DeFranco was five-for-five in PATs. Game 1 Photos
The Panthers gave a rude welcome to their guests, the Boone County Rebels, in Game 2 at The Pit, by not only keeping them off the scoreboard, but by turning in a record-setting offensive onslaught, scoring 56 points in the process. Kyle Koester was the main offensive weapon. Koester scored 5 TDs in the first half, to tie the school mark, and lead the team to a 35-0 halftime lead. Turning short yardage plays into huge gains, Koester scored five consecutive times, on a five-yard run, a 44-yard pass from QB Collin Carey, a six-yard run, an 18-yard run, and a 31-yard pass from Carey. Following Tom DeFranco's five successful PATs, the half ended, 35-0. But the Panthers were not finished. Early in the second half, Phil Rueve sailed through the Rebels' punt team and returned a punt 76 yards for a TD; DeFranco followed with his sixth PAT on the night. Once the first team retired, the backups had equal success. Led by QBs Junior Matt Scholl and Sophomore David Turner, Bill Tiemeier scored on a 6-yard run, and Jake Herrmann raced 20 yards for the game's final TD. Kicker Nick Wilcher hit both PATs, and the final score was 56-0. Game 2 Photos
In the seventy-first meeting between the two schools, the Panthers overwhelmed the Mustangs of Western Hills, 42-6, in Game 3 at The Pit. The victory was the Panthers ninth in a row in the series; Elder now leads the series 52-17-2. Senior RB Bill Tiemeier led the ground attack, with 21 carries for 125 yards and a touchdown. Senior QB Collin Carey completed only two of three passes, but both were good for TDs. The first was to senior TE Joel Wainscott, good for 11 yards, and the second was to Senior WR Brett Mezger for 54 yards. Junior RB Kyle Koester added another TD on the ground on a four-yard run. Senior Kicker Tom DeFranco continued his perfect string of PATs, hitting 5 more, giving him 16 straight on the season. Senior Nick Wilcher added one more PAT in the third quarter. Senior DB Ryan Vanderpool started the scoring with a 52-yard return of a fumble recovery for a TD. Game 3 Photos
With a 3-0 record, the Elder Panthers were the #1 team in Greater Cincinnati. Game 4 brought the Highland Bluebirds, the #1 team in Kentucky and reigning state champions, to The Pit, and a sold-out crowd of 11,000 saw another Panther victory, 35-14, as Elder handed Highlands its first loss in 19 games. Junior RB Kyle Koester was virtually unstoppable, as he picked up 227 yards and two TDs on 42 carries, the most carries ever in a single game for an Elder RB. Senior QB Collin Carey completed 12 out of 21 passes for 165 yards. Carey completed one TD pass to Senior WR Chris Braun for 7 yards, and added two TDs himself on runs of 1 and 5 yards. Senior Kicker Tom DeFranco continued his string of PATs with five more. The Panther defense struggled early as Highlands led 14-7 at the half, but the tide turned in the second half and the Bluebirds' total yardage for the game was only 24 yards rushing and 93 yards passing. Game 4 Photos
The Panthers maintained their undefeated season in style in Game 5, defeating an inexperienced squad from Indianapolis Arsenal Tech, 56-0. Replacing the Panthers' leading rusher Kyle Koester, who sat out the game with an injury, senior running back Michael Dattilo led the ground game with 88 yards on nine carries and 3 TDs. QB Collin Carey marshalled the team in the first half, completing 6 of 7 passes for 114 yards and 2 TDs. RB Bill Tiemeier replaced Dattilo in the second half, and carried the ball 13 times for 74 yards and two TDs. Brett Mezger, Joel Wainscott, and Tim Stephens added single scores for the Panthers. Tom DeFranco and Nick Wilcher continued the team's string of successful point after attempts: DeFranco kicked 6 to give him 27 on the season, and Wilcher added 2 more to give him a total of 5. Game 5 Photos
Elder's league play began with Game 6, facing GCL rival La Salle at the Lancers' field. After the Panther defense held the Lancers to a 25-yard field goal on their first drive, the offense, led by senior QB Collin Carey and RB Kyle Koester, took charge and scored a TD in each quarter to bring home win #6 for the Panthers, 28-10. Koester broke free on Elder's second play from scrimmage and ran 56 yards for the team's first score. Koester totaled 224 yards on 33 carries, scoring again in the third quarter on a 13-yard run. Carey scored in the second quarter on a 1-yard plunge, and senior WR Brett Mezger added the team's final TD in the fourth quarter on a reception of a 10-yard Carey pass. Kicker Tom DeFranco added four more PATs to bring his season total to 31 and the team's string without a miss to 36. The Lancers battled all evening, but just as it seemed they would grab the momentum, the Elder defense would step up and make the big play. Defensive star of the evening was senior DB Brian Rosenthal with two interceptions. Game 6 Photos
The Elder Panthers held Moeller to 5 points in the first three quarters and held on for a 28-18 win at The Pit in Game 7. The victory was Doug Ramsey's first over Moeller as Head Coach, and kept the team undefeated at 7-0. The tone for the game was set early, as the Panthers' defense stopped the Crusaders on their opening drive, and then the Panthers marched down the field and scored on a Kyle Koester 13-yard run. Both defenses then held, but a bad snap over punter Koester's head traveled out of the end zone for a Moeller safety. Moeller responded with a 27-yard Mike Murphy field goal, and the Panthers led, 7-5, early in the second quarter. With less than two minutes left in the half, Elder rallied for a score on a 78-yard, seven play drive capped by a Koester 1-yard run. At the half, the score was Elder 14, Moeller 5. The Panthers opened the second half with a 75-yard, six-play drive which ended with what would prove to be the winning TD on a 37-yard Collin Carey-to-Chris Braun TD pass. Tom DeFranco's third PAT of the game was good, and the home team led 21-5. Elder's final score was added later in the third quarter on a Kyle-Koester 13-yard run, followed by DeFranco's school record-setting 35th Kicked Extra Point for the season. Moeller added two TDs in the fourth quarter on runs by QB Brian Reisert (1 yard) and RB Marcus Blanks (5 yards) to close out the scoring. Koester accumulated 202 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries to lead the Panthers' ground attack. Carey completed 10-of-18 passes for 230 yards and 1 TD. Game 7 Photos
The Panthers lost their first game of the season at St. Xavier on October 15, 30-13. The win gave the Bombers the 1999 GCL Championship; Elder finished second with a 2-1 league mark. The game started out well for the Panthers, as Andrew Dwyer's first of two interceptions stopped the Bombers' first drive. Elder scored on the subsequent possession, on a six-yard pass from Collin Carey to Phil Rueve; Tom DeFranco's 36th PAT of the season was good, and the Panthers led, 7-0. The Bombers scored shortly thereafter, but the PAT was blocked, and Elder held the lead, 7-6. Following the St. Xavier score, little mistakes led to big problems for the Panthers, as poor field position kept them deep in their own territory, and St. Xavier's strong defense consistently stopped the Panthers' drives. By contrast, the Panthers could not stop St. Xavier's offense, and the Bombers scored on a 35-yard field goal to take the lead. By halftime, their lead had grown to 23-7. Elder scored early in the third quarter on a Kyle Koester 1-yard run, but the two-point conversion failed, and the Panthers could never get closer than 23-13. St. Xavier responded with another score later in the third quarter, and the game ended, 30-13. Elder's leading rusher Kyle Koester was held to only 65 yards on 20 carries. QB Collin Carey completed 21 of 38 passes for 317 yards. Game 8 Photos
The team won its regular season finale against west-side rival Oak Hills on October 29, 16-15, on Tom DeFranco's 29-yard field goal with 13 seconds left. Down 15-13 with 1:46 left in the game, the Panthers' defense held and forced the Highlanders to punt, and Elder took over on their own 36 with 1:29 to go. Collin Carey then completed four passes and drove the team to the 13, from where DeFranco kicked the game-winner. DeFranco had his first missed extra point of the season earlier in the game, when a personal foul penalty following the Panthers' first TD forced the PAT to be placed on the 35-yard line. He also hit the crossbar on a fourth-quarter field goal attempt from 39 yards out, but made good on his chance to win the game. Senior DB Brian Rosenthal scored the Panthers' first TD on a 25-yard interception return in the second quarter. Then followed the missed extra point, and Oak Hills led 7-6 at the half. The Highlanders scored first in the second half, and the successful two-point conversion put them up 15-6. Later in the third quarter, Carey completed six straight passes, the last a 15-yard TD pass to TE Joel Wainscott, and DeFranco's PAT made the score 15-13. The teams battled for position throughout the fourth quarter until Elder took the lead for the first time on DeFranco's field goal. Carey completed 19 of 32 passes for 291 yards and 1 TD. Top receiver for the Panthers was Brett Mezger, who had 9 receptions for 136 yards. Kyle Koester picked up 100 yards on 20 carries and added five pass receptions for 55 yards. Game 9 Photos
When the dust settled at the end of the season, the Harbin rankings matched up Elder (ranked #2) with Oak Hills (#7) again, along with Moeller (#8) and St. Xavier (#1), Huber Heights Wayne (#5) and Fairfield (#4), and Mason (#6) and Centerville (#3) in the first round of the playoffs in Region IV. The Panthers won the rematch with rival Oak Hills, 14-0, this time played at The Pit. Both teams battled scoreless until one minute was left in the half, when Panther DB Brian Rosenthal picked off a twice-tipped Rik Menchen pass, and QB Collin Carey hit Chris Braun with a 16-yard TD pass at the 20 second mark. The Panther defense held the Highlanders scoreless until junior RB Kyle Koester scored the insurance TD, runing the ball in from the five. Senior kicker Tom DeFranco was again perfect in extra point kicking, hitting both attempts. Oak Hills threatened to score late in the game, when Menchen hit Doug Fortune with a 70-yard pass, but Panther LB Pat Brunner saved the shutout when he caught up to Fortune and tripped him up at the Elder 5-yard line. The Panther defense then held, and the game ended 14-0. Kyle Koester picked up 159 yards on 21 carries. Playoff Game 1 Photos
The Centerville Elks defeated Mason in their first-round game, and were the Panthers' next opponent. In what may have been the most amazing comeback in Elder football history, the Panthers scored 21 points in the final three minutes to battle their way into the regional final, 49-42. The final game-winner was Ryan Vanderpool's 40-yard interception return with 8 seconds remaining in the contest. Centerville took an early 7-0 lead, but the Panthers responded quickly. Junior RB Kyle Koester scored two TDs in the first half, one on a 6-yard run, and the other on a sparkling 69-yard pass play from QB Collin Carey, in which Koester bulled over and pulled away from several defenders on his way to the endzone. Senior Michael Dattilo (2-yard run) and senior TE Joel Wainscott (22-yard pass from Carey) added TDs in the first half, and with a Koester conversion run and a Wainscott conversion pass from Carey, the Panthers were up 28-14 at the intermission. The second half was all Centerville, as they scored four unanswered touchdowns and took the lead 42-28 with three minutes left. But the Panthers were not finished. Senior QB Collin Carey drove the Panthers for the first of three scores, and he carried it in from 5 yards out with 2:08 left. Kicker Tom DeFranco, who struggled early in the game, missing a PAT and two short field goals, hit the first of three key extra points. The Elder defense, which had been tough all night but couldn't find an answer to the Elks' option play (they scored three TDs on runs of 55, 80, and 70 yards off the option), held off the Elks this time. Elder started on their own 20 with 1:42 left. Aided by a personal foul penalty which took TE Joel Wainscott out of the game, the Panthers drove to a second score, on a 26-yard pass to senior Aaron Brown, who had replaced Wainscott. DeFranco again hit the PAT, and the Panthers tied the game with 44 seconds left. The Elks got the ball back and overtime seemed inevitable, but Ryan Vanderpool picked off a pass which had been tipped by P. J. Volker and ran 40 yards into the end zone for the winning score. DeFranco hit his third PAT and the Panthers led 49-42, with eight seconds left. The defense held one more time, and the Panthers were on their way to the Region 4 championship. Elder QB Collin Carey hit 19-of-40 passes in the game for a school record-setting 382 yards. RB Kyle Koester finished with 94 yards rushing and 109 yards receiving. Playoff Game 2 Photos
The Elder Panthers' hopes for their first state football championship ended at Dayton's Welcome Stadium, as they lost to the Wayne Warriors, 24-14. The Panthers spotted the Warriors an early 7 points. After stopping Wayne on their first series, the Panthers fumbled the subsequent punt return and gave the ball back to the Warriors, who picked up their first TD five plays later. Elder quickly recovered, however, and Senior QB Collin Carey led the team to a score with a six-play, 79-yard drive, capped by a 15-yard TD pass to WR Brett Mezger. Senior kicker Tom DeFranco's PAT was good, and the score was tied with 3:29 left in the first quarter. Wayne answered almost immediately, to take the lead 14-7, but again Elder came back, as Junior RB Kyle Koester scored on a 7-yard run in the second quarter. Just before halftime, Wayne took the lead, 21-14. Both teams defenses toughened in the second half, and the only score was a Wayne 28-yard field goal. Elder's drives to tie the game were halted three times on interceptions. Wayne controlled the ball virtually the entire fourth quarter, allowing Elder only four plays, including two of the three interceptions. (Wayne went on to defeat Worthington Kilbourne, 12-10, in the state semi-final game, but lost to Cleveland St. Ignatius in the finals, 24-10. The win was St. Ignatius' record-setting eighth state championship, giving them one more than Moeller and Newark Catholic.) Playoff Game 3 Photos
Junior running back Kyle Koester led the team in scoring for the season, with 84 points on 14 TDs; he added 26 points in the playoffs on 4 TDs and 1 2-point conversion. Koester was also the team's rushing leader, with 1153 yards on 193 carries (for a average of 6.0 yards per carry) during the regular season, and 59 carries for 348 yards in the post-season. His 95 yards rushing in the final game against Wayne pushed him past Larry Parker to a new school record in Total Career Yards Rushing with 2363. Senior kicker Tom DeFranco set a new school mark with 37 PATs during the regular season, adding 7 more in the post-season. Senior QB Collin Carey passed for 2304 total yards, 1681 in the regular season and 623 in the playoffs, hitting 96 out of 169 for a regular season completion rate of 56.8%. Carey's leading receiver was Senior WR Brett Mezger, with 34 receptions for 605 yards (17.8 yards per reception) during the season and 14 receptions for 238 yards in the tournament. Senior TE Joel Wainscott was second among the receivers, with 25 receptions for 385 yards during the season, and 7 receptions for 117 yards in the playoffs.
For the defense, Junior P.J. Volker led the team with 99 regular-season tackles (48 in the playoffs); Senior Pat Brunner was second with 96 (46) and Pat McAtee was third with 94 (28). McAtee led the team with 19 tackles for loss on the season, setting a new school record for the season, as well as a new career TFL record with 29. Senior Brian Rosenthal led the team with 4 interceptions on the season (with 1 in the tournament) and 9 broken-up passes (with 3 more in the tournament).
Other records set by the 1999 Panthers include: Collin Carey's 8 career interceptions are the fewest ever for an Elder QB; Ryan Vanderpool's 93 yards gained on recovered fumbles set new season and career marks; Tom DeFranco's 117 kickoffs set a new career mark; and Michael Dattilo's kickoff return average of 26.5 yards sets a new career record. The team set a new school record for most points scored in a 9-game season with 309; most yards passing in a game (382 against Centerville) and most yards returned on fumble recoveries with 93.
Quarterback Collin Carey (Eastern Michigan), linebacker Pat Brunner (Vanderbilt) and offensive lineman Andy Christopfel (Michigan) were signed to play Division I college football. Joel Wainscott (Morehead State) and Pat McAtee (Mount St. Joseph) also continued their football careers in college.
Brett Mezger and Joel Wainscott represented the West Side in the Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association East/West High School All-star Football Game at Lockland's Roettger Stadium on Saturday, June 10. The East won 18-7, on a punt return and a fumble recovery for TDs in the fourth quarter. Elder was also represented on the East sideline by Assistant Head Coach Tim Viox (Elder '78), who is presently Head Football Coach at Madeira High School. The West team's Honorary Coach, Art DelConte, taught and coached at Elder from 1959-1962.
Andy Christopfel represented Ohio in the Big 33 Ohio/Pennsylvania All-Star Football Game in Hershey, PA on July 22. The PA team broke a two-year losing streak by defeating the Ohio team, 31-14. Andy was also chosen as an All-American by PrepStar Magazine.
